July 7, 2013 - Melons Have Arrived!

Of all of the fresh, delicious food we get at the farmer's market, my family's favorite is melons from Ochoa Produce.  When we pull in the parking lot and my 12-year-old son sees melons he literally whoops with joy and starts bouncing in his seat.  Last night I cut up a yellow watermelon and it was everything I remember them to be... sweet, flavorful, juicy... all of the things that grocery store melons promise but rarely deliver.  In addition to watermelon in three colors, yellow, orange (my personal favorite), and red, they have a selection of other types of melons as well.  I love to try new things and every week we buy at least four watermelons as well as a couple of melons of other varieties.  I can't think of a more wonderful celebration of summer!

Karen's Kitchen had one of my husband's favorites, Lemon Blueberry Pound Cake, so I brought one of those home too, along with my son's usual dozen cookies.  This week we bought Apple Berry Jam and Strawberry Banana Jam to add to plain yogurt for breakfast.  Not only is it delicious, there's always at least three different flavors of jelly or jam in the refrigerator and I know exactly what ingredients my family is eating.

On another note, please forgive me for being remiss in updating this blog.  I have a new granddaughter and she's been demanding all of my attention.  I'd forgotten what an adventure shopping can be with an infant in tow!  My visits to the market are definitely less social when I bring her along and my husband has graciously agreed to go to the farmer's market without me when I've had her on Sunday.  I look forward to her getting a little older so she can enjoy the market with us.

Have a wonderful week and we hope to see you at the market next Sunday.

May 26, 2013 - Strawberries!

Not only did I get some great spring onions and fresh garlic, Ochoa Produce has strawberries!  Between that and the delicious Zucchini Cherry Bread  from Karen's Kitchen, we had a delicious post-lunch treat.  Thanks to the late spring there are lots of delicious greens such as swiss chard, red and green leaf lettuce, cabbage, mustard, and kale as well.  There were also beets which will be more abundant in the next couple of weeks, as well as broccoli, squash, and turnips. If you haven't tried Ochoa Produce broccoli you're missing out on a wonderful treat! I steam it and my family devours every last floret.

If you're interested in canning let Ochoa Produce know, they often have quantities of seasonal vegetables available if you let them know ahead of time.
